CCD means "charge coupled device" and is the most common technology used in barcodes.  Many tiny, light-sensitive diodes work together to read barcodes.  The scanner measures the light reflected from the barcode by hundreds of light sensors in rows inside a CCD barcode reader.

Pen Barcode Scanner
This type of scanner measures the reflected light which goes into the scanner itself.  Also known as "wand scanners" because of their small size, lightness, and ease of use, they allow the operator to quickly drag the pen tip across the barcode.  Pen barcode scanners are popular with grocery stores for checkout.

Portable Barcode Reader
Power efficient, light, and small in size, a portable barcode reader allows the operator to carry it around.  This type is perfect if you have large or bulky items to scan, or if you have merchandise piled high.

PC Barcode Scanner
Simple to set up since you only need to plug it into your PC, these scanners do not need a separate external power source.  Some plug into the PC keyboard and others use a USB socket.  The scanned data goes into the PC as if you had typed it in on the keyboard.

Bluetooth or Wireless Barcode Scanners
Useful in storage warehouses, yards, or loading docks because there are no wires to trip over.  Items can be scanned at different angles, and the unit can send and receive information to and from the PC.
