Record Sales on Thanksgiving and Black Friday
Great deals brought customers to stores in record numbers on Thanksgiving and Black Friday this year, setting historic high sales records. According to a survey by BIGresearch, both online and in-store sales reached the highest level in survey history!
The average holiday shopper spent $398.62 over the weekend, up from $365.34 spent last year at the same time. Overall, an estimated $52.4 billion was spent. 37.8 percent of total weekend spending was online shopping, also an increase from last year.
Clothing and electronics were among the top gifts selected. Electronic items were chosen by nearly 4 in 10 shoppers (39.4%), up from 36.7% last year.
Not surprisingly, the trend is toward more shopping by use of smartphones and tablets. Nearly one quarter of shoppers reported that they either used these devices for holiday shopping already, or planned to use them during the remainder of the holiday season.
